Destop Goes Awol

I'm using Microsoft Word.
There were some images in the document and I accidentally dragged one out and canceled it from being saved.
and my desktop Wallpaper becomes stuck.... Literally.

The wall paper cannot be changed, I have tried several times to change it. To add to it, the text labeling the icons on the Desktop are highlighted. I can still move the icons and my own files, but the desktop won't change or the highlighted text won't go away.

I have tried rebooting.

Does anyone know what to do about this? basically?....
