Character Map doesn't work - please help
Win95 SR2.1
Today, when I tried to use the Character Map, it didn't work (nothing happened). I went into the Win95 directory and double-clicked CharMap.exe - same result. I tried Run/Charmap.exe - same result. I deleted CharMap.exe, and extracted it again from my Windows CD. That didn't work, either. I was afraid to use the install/remove programs applet in the control panel, because when I tried to check NLY character map (i.e., uncheck all other components, the message indications implied that I was trying to remove those already installed components (which I was definitely NT trying to do). So I cancelled out of the install/remove programs applet. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the Character Map executable to work properly? Thanks for any help. |

Character Map doesn't work - please help
Try reinstalling it in Add/Remove-Windows Setup but do not uncheck
anything else or they will be removed. That is the way Windows Setup works. Leave them checked. If Character Map is checked, then uncheck it, exit Windows Setup, go back in and check it. There are replacements that are better. Try these sites. They are free and I have them both. They are good. Character Map doesn't work - please help
A correction on the two applications in my previous post.
Get them here: Characteristica - Extended Character Map - Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems In comp.os.ms-windows.setup.win95, Les Feinstein <les@prolynx.invalid.comwrote: >Win95 SR2.1 > >Today, when I tried to use the Character Map, it didn't work (nothing >happened). Character Map doesn't work - please help
Alan,
Thank you for the reply, and forgive my late response (I was trying to make my computer behave). First, I had no luck re-installing the MS version of Character Map. Same old problem - no response when I tried to use it. Then, I installed the Extended Character Map (one of your suggestions), and it complained about not having a certion DLL file (can't remember which one), although it worked K on my machine at work, using Win 2000 Professional. Finally, I installed Characteristica, and it works just fine. I still don't know what the problem is with the MS version, and I'm still curious, but Characteristica will suit me just fine. Thank you again.
