I'm confused

I'm very new to computers. And I'm very confused about them too. My friend
gave me an older Gx1. He had already added as much RAM as possible,
and despite the tiny hard drive, it runs very well for basic office needs.
It's smooth, it's fast, and it doesn't try to eat me. But when i put on a
game, even an older one, it gets mad at me. Is there a video graphics card
that will run well, and will be kind to my relatively empty wallet?

Thanks for the help -Christian

I assume you are talking about a Dell Optiplex GX1.

These machines had a PCI 2.1 compliant expansion bus. You should be able to find a low cost PCI graphics card that will play games.

The graphics controller that was built in was a ATI Rage Pro with 4MB graphics RAM. Make sure if you buy something newer it has at least 64MB graphics memory.

The machine and current graphics should be able to play older games quite well. Have you upgraded the operating system, as this will be something that will slow down this machine a lot. It was built pre 2000 so while it is useful you need to understand it's limitations.

here is a link to more information on the mavhine http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ban_gx1/
